About Shunsai

Let me introduce you to Shunsai Restaurant, an authentic Japanese restaurant located at t5/45 Wellington Rd, East Brisbane QLD 4169, Australia, and one I’m always keen to mention when friends ask for food that feels genuinely Japanese rather than overly stylized. From the moment you walk in, the mood is calm and inviting, with a clean, understated setting that quietly sets expectations for careful preparation and respect for ingredients. Shunsai puts a strong focus on balance and freshness, and that philosophy shows up across the menu in ways that feel thoughtful instead of complicated. Many dishes arrive as small plates, which naturally encourages sharing, tasting, and lingering over the table, while still working perfectly well for anyone dining solo. The selection comfortably caters to different lifestyles, with vegetarian and vegan options sitting alongside lighter, healthier choices that don’t lose their sense of comfort or flavor. Drinks are handled with the same easy confidence, offering beer, wine, and spirits that pair smoothly with the food and suit both casual catch-ups and longer evenings. What also stands out to me is how practical Shunsai is for everyday dining; you can settle in with dine-in service when you want the full experience, rely on takeaway for something quick and reliable, or choose delivery when convenience matters most. That flexibility makes it easy to fit into regular routines rather than saving it for special occasions only. The kitchen’s approach feels consistent and grounded, favoring quality and clarity over trends, which gives the restaurant a steady, trustworthy identity. Whether it’s a relaxed meal after work, a low-key night with friends, or a simple craving for authentic Japanese flavors, Shunsai naturally fits into the moment without trying to steal the spotlight. The pacing of service feels unhurried yet attentive, supporting conversation and comfort, while the overall experience stays approachable, familiar, and easy to recommend to anyone exploring East Brisbane’s local dining scene.

I came here for my birthday and had a great time! The store was very cute, and the omakase was amazing. The nigiri was my favourite !! The service was excellent, too; both our waitress and the chef were incredibly sweet and kind, constantly checking on us, accommodating our needs, and being so understanding with our crying baby. I definitely recommend coming here—my family and I will be returning for sure!

I came into Shunsai for an omakase (chef's choice) experience, and left a comment with my reservation that I enjoyed raw fish and traditional Japanese flavors. I was so incredibly impressed with my experience! First, the chef definitely read my note, because his selection was fresh, authentic, and reminded me of my time in Japan. He also paired my meal with several unique sakes upon request, and he explained the best way to enjoy each course. The sashimi and nigiri courses were so beautifully fresh, easily some of the best raw fish I've had in Brisbane. I had my first taste of raw bay bug - creamy, plump, well textured, no fishiness, a bold but worthwhile try for sushi lovers. Not to mention the atmosphere was cozy and simplistic, and sitting at the bar allowed for a more intimate interaction with the chef than most places. All and all I would definitely recommend this spot for an adventurous eater, a memorable date night, or any Japan lovers wanting a real taste of the country. Will definitely be coming back for a future special occasion!

Solo Eating Meals: Mango Jack Tuna & Kingfish with Snapper & Noodle Soup. Salmon with Meringue. Calamari, Unagi & Pork Katsu Travalli Fish? Tuna Belly, Calamari with Sea Urchin, Seared Salmon with Butter & Scallop Nigiri with ginger on the side. Cucumber & Plum Maki Roll Having lived in the Gabba area for many years, I can't believe I didn't know about this local Japanese Kaiseki/Omakase restaurant. It was my first time trying out Omakase and it won't be my last. I had the Omakase course where you set the budget and inform the chef about your favourite Japanese ingredients. Each meal was presented beautifully and tasted as good as it looked. My personal favourite was the seared Salmon with Butter. Because it was raining and customers had cancelled, I was offered an extra dish, chicken sashimi which was surprisingly really good. The staff was lovely to talk to, learning about each dish, the chef's background and our love for Japanese Cuisine. Highly recommend Shunsai and will definitely come back soon.

My wife and I had the pleasure of celebrating our 5 year anniversary here tonight and it did not disappoint! With the inclusion of our newborn, they made us feel welcomed and accommodated for our needs, even made space for us to fit our pram next to us. We chose the omakase option for dinner, and we’re glad we did! The food was phenomenal, especially the sashimi - which was imported all the way from Japan. The chef brought us back to Japan with his menu tonight. Not only did he make it feel like a personal menu but he was a joy to talk to, even changed the temperature of the restaurant to accomodate for our baby. He made our night very special - thank you! A night we will never forget.
